Biography

San Francisco native, Filipino-American baritone Rolfe Dauz performance highlights include Don Alfonso (Cosi fan tutte), Leporello and Masetto (Don Giovanni), Figaro and Il Conte (Le nozze di Figaro), Achilla (Giulio Cesare), and Claudio (Agrippina), Junius (The Rape of Lucretia), Farasmane (Radamisto), and Dulcamara (L’elisire d’amore). In 2016, Rolfe was invited as one of fifteen young professionals to Open Space: Opera in the 21st Century to perform the role of Junius in Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia at The Banff Centre directed by Paul Curran. His performance as Junius was hailed, "Rolfe Dauz was a great Junius. One tires of two-dimensional characterizations of this role, but he has much to say politically and dramatically through difficult, angular music. Mr. Dauz was another perfect casting, his focused baritone knifing insults and resentment toward Tarquinius whom he accused of making “Rome his brothel”. His bold statements of rebellion near the end of the opera at stage right were the acme of balanced ensemble singing, perfect diction, and dramatic acting — the words of a disaffected general ready to exploit tragedy for military ends." - Calgary Herald

In 2014, Rolfe began his Master’s Degree at McGill University and performed the title role in Le nozze di Figaro as well as Betto in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi.  Dauz is a graduate of the Vocal Arts Program at Bard College (New York) where he worked with Sanford Sylvan and Dawn Upshaw. Outside of Bard, he was an active performer with the Broad Street Orchestra in Kinderhook, NY as well as with the Albany Symphony as soloist for Handel's Alexander's Feast, Dettingen Te Deum, Ode for Queen Anne and Bach Cantata BWV 78.

He was recently part of Opera2Day's (The Netherlands) touring production of The Fall of the House of Usher by Philip Glass as the Servant/Medic and understudy of the role William. Dauz was also the understudy of Leporello in The Orchestra of the 18th Century's (Amsterdam) touring production of Don Giovanni. Rolfe is a recent graduate of the Dutch National Opera Academy (Amsterdam) and was a recipient of the Holland Scholarship and the Non-EU Talent Grant. Performance highlights with the DNOA include Farasmane (Radamisto), Dulcamara (L'elisir d'amore), Lord Dunmow (A Dinner Engagement).
Recently, Dauz was seen at the 2021 Holland Festival performing the role of Wotan/Hingaan Jann in a new opera entitled Ine Aya’ by Indonesian composer Yadi Nursalim Anugerah. The NRC reviewed his performance saying, “the Germanic god Wotan was played by the impressive Filipino baritone Rolfe Dauz.” His vocal-piano duo, Youth and Love (Gabrielė Žemaitytė, pianist), recently was awarded 2nd place at the Copenhagen Lied Duo Competition in October, 2021.

Upcoming for Rolfe are productions at the Chautauqua Opera Company for the summer 2022 as a Festival Artist performing roles in Thomas Virgil’s The Mother Of Us All and a contemporary opera by Kamala Sankaram entitled Thumbprint.
